We are happy to announce the 2013 Visions in Feminism Conference Date is: Saturday, April 13th

This Year’s Conference Theme is: Bringing Feminism to Un-Feminist Spaces

Feminism as a movement is often torn between a generic “Girl Power” label and overly isolating academic jargon. Both methods can distract the application of feminism from its focus. The spirit of feminism is inclusive, multi-faceted and complex. By creating space for voices from across religious, social, and political spectrums to address racism, classism, hetero and cis sex-isms we expand and infiltrate spaces that are not outwardly labeled as “feminist”. This year, the ViF conference will explore how we can bring feminism into areas of society that have been under-served by, do not openly identify with, or are unsympathetic to feminism’s goals. By focusing on these efforts, the movement can expand to reach those individuals who would not readily align themselves with feminism and successfully demonstrate the necessity of feminist approaches in continuing the anti-oppression work of the future.

Each year, Visions in Feminism seeks to provide a forum for diverse perspectives within a feminist framework to keep the movement relevant, inspire action by its attendees, and destabilize patriarchy and other forms of oppression.

We’re seeking work for display, workshop leaders, and collaborative muralists for our very exciting summer program. We are open to your creative and fun cultural production ideas that focus on any two areas in our set of concerns: economics, race, sexuality and gender. These can be performance-based, cultural interventions, or Bristol Board. We will also have a reading room, where we would be more than happy to consider a book you submit. Perhaps you want to have a wall where people write down how much money they think various superheroes are worth? Maybe you have recreated a scene from Maus in cheesecake that is fraught with gender conflicts. Or, likely, you just make incredibly cool illustrations / comics / paintings / sculptures about trying to get by. We want to see ‘em.*

Please include a short biographical statement in a word document and up to three JPG images of less than 1MB each. These can be of separate works, or of separate views of the same work. Do not send more than three images. If you are proposing a workshop, please send a separate word doc describing the workshop. If you would like to be considered a muralist, please indicate so in your cover letter, and send three relevant work samples. We are requesting a $3 entry fee from each applicant (paypal to aem at anneelizabethmoore dot com), but if you cannot pay this fee you should request a waiver in advance. “… the big corporate comic companies (Marvel and DC) are actually better with representation of women than a lot of the “art comic,” indie publishers. Of the 15 publishers surveyed in 2011, Ladydrawers found that Marvel and DC were pretty much middle-of-the-herd in representation, while “respectable,” indie houses like Top Shelf had horrible stats on the issue. I find this pretty interesting because I think it speaks to some accountability with mainstream exposure- Marvel and DC aren’t paragons of equality yet, but they’re way better than they once were, especially since the year 2000 because superhero blockbusters have put them firmly in the public eye once again. Indie houses like Vertigo (owned by DC, but principally “indie”), Top Shelf, Fantagraphics, and D+Q are seemingly much less scrutinized because their prestige gives them a shield of “artistic license,” with which they can marginalize and belittle social justice concerns. I’m not saying these publishers are EVIL or anything, mind you, and each of them has certainly published some very progressive books, very good books, and so forth. I’m just saying that they can (and do) get away with more than DC/Marvel.—same awesome guy, who clearly gets it, and whom we love. THANKS AWESOME GUY”

“Ladydrawers are a collective of people, many of whom are artists, who are interested in studying social justice both in comic stories and in the comic business itself. Ladydrawers has conducted (so I’ve been told by my friends, who are among their members) the largest studies of gender & sexuality in comics ever undertaken, and they’ve also started studies on race and ethnicity too. Their site doesn’t have an archive which makes it kind of a pain in the ass to navigate, but they have some of the best information out there chronicling the evolution of the medium as pertaining to gender & sexuality concerns. I most highly recommend downloading The Women’s Comic Anthology which they put out, a zine which presents at least one portion of their statistical analysis. There’s a lot of interesting information. Really fascinating stuff. Keep an eye on their other books too, which feature statistics as well as personal stories from women & GSM geeks about making comics, reading comics, and being part of the comic fandom.—some awesome guy in Reddit”

CALL FOR ONLINE SUBMISSIONS!!!

Little Heart is looking to continue the conversation on marriage equality and LGBTQ issues; discussing gender and sexuality through comics and art — how they affect our everyday lives and our communities. As with the in print component to the project, the idea for the work is one based on inclusion rather than exclusion. Artists/Cartoonists/Zinesters of all skill levels and backgrounds are invited to participate in this project.

SIZE: should be about 5x6”, large enough to display on our large-format tumblr without being pixellated. Larger should be okay, smaller is not.

COLOR, etc: Anything that will display on the web correctly. Black and white, greyscale, or RGB color is best. Gifs and animated panels/comics are fine too as long as they display correctly on tumblr.

LENGTH: At minimum, we’ll require one panel or image. Any length beyond that is completely acceptable. With that said, shorter works will be easier to showcase. Longer submissions will be put into a photoset, which can sometimes shrink images. If you’d like to include a link to a place where your comic can be viewed at a larger size, please do so!

Ownership for all submission will remain with the artists. All work can be previously printed, later collected, linked to, showcased elsewhere, viewable online, etc without anyone’s permission needing to be granted.

Hateful, sexist, or prejudiced work of any kind will not be tolerated. Vulgarity as it constitutes to violence, nudity, cursing are acceptable so long as there is a reason for it in the narrative.

Unfortunately we will be unable to provide payment.
